Fallout 3 Mothership Zeta Review

Bethesda’s critically acclaimed Fallout 3 has seen several bits of downloadable content, which generally provide enjoyable new gameplay for a modest price. Naturally, there is some variability to be found in terms of the quality of this downloadable content. Sadly, Mothership Zeta appears to fall at the less impressive end of the spectrum. It is a fun, yet fairly mindless extension of combat scenarios that fails to offer anything particularly new.

Lured in by the classic distress beacon, the player is beamed aboard the mothership where most of the action plays out. The aliens are fairly predictable – perhaps even stereotypical – in their design and level of menace. They rely heavily on technology to maintain dominance over members of your own species. Not surprisingly, one of the simplest ways to overcome such odds is to utilize their own equipment against them. While this is certainly not the first time alien technology has come into play in a Fallout game, some of the new gear you’ll acquire is rather satisfying to use. The disintegrator functions pretty much as you’d expect, which is to say that it’s great for blasting through organic and mechanical baddies. However, the gameplay itself isn’t substantially altered by its use, wasting a very good opportunity for introducing innovative mechanics in downloadable content.

The levels are very nicely designed, with excellent attention to detail in surface textures and lighting effects. It’s a shame most of the polish is purely cosmetic, as one would think the potential for novelty in an extra terrestrial spaceship would be much higher. Instead, the content feels like your run-of-the-mill FPS. It’s pretty, and it’s a pleasant experience, yet largely forgettable. It is somewhat confounding that Mothership Zeta is the final note upon which the developers have decided to bring Fallout 3 to a close. There was a great deal of opportunity to present something new and exciting, and anyone who’s played through previous installments of Fallout 3’s downloadable episodes knows this to be possible. Common sense dictates that such content must improve consistently each time, not redefine or simplify itself.

On the whole, it seems Mothership Zeta is a simple bit of entertainment that doesn’t last very long. Even if you don’t mind that it plays like a big shooting gallery, things tend to get rather tedious early on. There’s nothing that will keep die-hard fans from going nuts over it, but even they will be forced to admit that this is far from the highlight of Fallout 3. There are trinkets that can be collected, and much scenery to be admired, but not really enough to keep players coming back for more. When push comes to shove, the penny-pinchers will find the earlier downloads to be more worth the price of admission.

Review Scoring Details for Fallout 3: Mothership Zeta

Gameplay: 7.0
Strangely dumbed-down into a brainless shooter, a newcomer might play through Mothership Zeta and scarcely realize it was supposed to be an extension of an RPG. At least the mechanics were strong to begin with, otherwise this wouldn’t have worked at all.

Graphics: 9.0
A fairly refreshing atmosphere within Fallout 3’s already impressive graphics engine.

Sound: 7.0
The sound design remains strong, though it’s not exactly brimming with new aural experiences.

Difficulty: Easy
The mothership is not much of a challenge, and it doesn’t last very long.

Concept: 6.0
Alien spaceships have been done to death, and despite their introduction in Fallout 3, very little has been achieved.

Overall: 7.0
Mothership Zeta is a decent distraction that many Fallout fans won’t mind paying extra coin for. If money is tight, however, I would suggest first looking into some of the better content available.

An alien spaceship? How could that be boring?
