Death to Spies Review
Submerse yourself in a world of Soviet counterintelligence in this new release from Atari. You are a secret agent in the Secret Service SMERSH division. As a Soviet spy you are placed behind German lines to use covert ops to complete many missions.
Set during WWII, it is your mission to help turn the tide of this war in favor of the motherland. You have been trained to infiltrate, execute and assassinate with prejudice. Though you will have access to Russian and German weapons, you must kill the enemy in silence when at all possible being careful not to arouse suspicion from surrounding guards. Capturing enemy uniforms is paramount for success in penetrating hostile territory. Of course, you will look much more like the enemy if the uniform you took is not riddled with bullet holes and stained with blood. Sneak up behind them and knock ‘em out with some chloroform or use a choke wire. Both are effective; just make sure you hide the body or guards will sure to raise an alarm.
If you enjoy covert op games in a third-person view, this game will feel much like Splinter Cell, but without all the latest gadgets. Remember this is set during WWII where night vision was not a reality yet. Though the tools at hand are primitive, they are effective. There are ways to get by the guards like whistling or throwing an object to distract them which makes sneaking up on them much more easier. Though there are times by using distracting techniques can get you past them without bloodshed. There will be times that a blasting your way out maybe necessary, so there are plenty of other weapons at your disposal.
Objects and commands are in the form of drop down menu so choosing the task is quite simple. Those first person shooter fans will be happy to know that when a sniper rifle is chosen you will get a scope view and shoot like a FP shooter. This gives a more realistic feel.
Visually the game looks pretty good. There is plenty of blood to be spilled which is why it carries a M-17 rating. The sound effects and musical score were nicely done and add realism to the game. The game itself is quite a challenge because though guards are predictable they seem to know something is up. You can tell where there looking and the distance they can see by the helpful mini map.
Overall I would recommend this title for those that enjoy playing this style of game. It was nicely done and seemed very realistic.
