Combat Over Europe: Forgotten Battles - IL2 Expansion Review
COE offers dozens of missions over 8 different campaigns. Campaigns include dozens of missions for Luftwaffe, Russian, American, and British elements. It's about a 50/50 mix when it comes to action or escort. The escort missions just seem to drag because of all the flying and lack of action. The action of the battle missions get you in the fray almost from the get go and in my opinion are some of my favorites. There are also cooperative online missions and a speech pack that convert Russian and German to English. This is very helpful when in a dog fight so you can actually understand what your wing men are saying. Last but not least there is a skin pack with 10 new skins.
This is an expansion for the forgotten battles version of the game, so you do need Combat Over Europe: Forgotten Battles (FB) to play. There really is no difference in the game scoring details, so for the most part you will see most of the same details from my FB review. As you will note in my scoring details of this title below - they are pretty much the same as the FB since it is basically the same game, with just a whole heck of a lot of new missions.
Training features include WWII video footage designed for familiarization and flight training for the P47 and P51. Training provides instruction on air to air gunnery and some training for pilots of the new Me 262 jet fighter. Single training missions allow you to test your own skills in secret jet. A separate twelve page PDF document provides classroom style instruction in air to air combat. Other documents include A Short History of JV44, Development of the Me262 and an interview with a living P47 Thunderbolt ace. Cockpit guides are included for the Bf 109, the P47D, the P51D and the Me 262, as well as takeoff and climb performance charts for the P47-D and P51-D. Needless to say there is a lot of good information here to learn and fill any craving for a bit of history.

Gameplay: 7
Enemy AI was very effective even on the easiest settings, which can be
frustrating at first. There are some long missions that require a lot of flying
just to reach the objectives. Unfortunately you can not speed up the time
compression to get into the action.
Graphics: 8
Stunning. Truly a leader in the genre, the graphics are top notch. Nothing
could be sweeter than watching fragments of a plain falling back down to earth
as your plane is riddled with bullets.
Sound: 8
Engines, machine gunfire crashes, etc. all sound realistic.
Difficulty: Hard
Steep learning curve for those newbies, but Ace pilots should find it a bit
easier. Enemy pilots seem to be very accurate though despite the difficulty
setting you chose.
Concept: 7
Being able to pilot vintage aircraft from both sides is great concept. With
all the WWII flight sims out there, its not exactly a "new" idea. This in
another expansion, for a great game, but how many more must we endure before we
get a whole new title?
Multiplayer: 8
This is probably the most fun part of the game. You can really match your
skills with other pilots to see who is really the best. Nothing like playing
against a human when the AI is just to predictable. Unfortunately for me, AI is
hard enough; real people had me crash and burning left and right. But when you
do manage to get a kill under your belt, WOW it feels great! CO-OP play is one
of my favorite multiplayer games.
Overall: 7.8
A must have if you absolutely love the original. The casual player however,
may not find this to be one to add to their game library, but is definitely
worth the price.
