Blue's Clues: Blue Takes You To School Review

Blue and Joe are going to school! Come along, you're invited to attend Miss Marigold's classroom and learn along with Blue and all her friends.

Blue loves going to school, and is inviting her preschool friends to come with her. Once kids arrive at the school, it's time to pick a personal cubby hole, complete with name and picture. Miss Marigold is having circle time, and explains the different activities available in her classroom.

These activities are: Water Table Time, a logical activity that requires plotting a directional course for a boat to reach an island; Nature Discovery Garden, a science game that takes place in the garden and where kids can take snapshots of plants and animals for a nature book; Class Pet Playtime, a virtual pet activity featuring a rabbit; Music Time, a musical activity that emphasized listening skills; and Art Time, a paint activity.

Of the five activities, Water Table Time, Music Time and Nature Discovery Garden are the best in terms of engaging fun and educational focus. In Water Table Time, kids will place directional arrows to direct the boat across a grid-like screen to a desert island. This requires logical thinking, and with three levels, there is challenge for those who want it. Music Time is one of the best preschool musical activities I've seen in a long time. Blue and four of her classmates are gathered in a circle, each with his or her own instrument. Blue plays a certain rhythm on her instrument, then players choose the character playing the matching rhythm. This continues until all five characters are playing along with Blue, then the player gets to use an instrument and join in on a classroom song. There are also three difficulty levels to this activity. Discovery Garden is a nice nature game which features realistic appearing animals and plants, which is refreshing in a children's game. Miss Marigold asks for certain animals or plants, giving out clues - on the harder levels the animals may be hiding.

The paint activity is pretty basic, but offers a fun feature that lets kids send their creations to other users and game characters, plus receive them, with Joe as the delivery person. This is a nice touch. The Class Pet Playtime is fun the first few times around, but tends to get old as there's really not much to do with that rabbit. A few more items to interact with it would be better.

This is a good preschool program that offers engaging activities that will amuse and stimulate young users. There are a few problems, though, mainly in the fact that the age range is off; this is a preschool program, best suited for children ages three and four, not five and six. Also, there's just not enough to do, the same complaint I've had with other Blue's Clues software programs. More activities similar to the educational ones found in Blue's Clues Preschool would have rounded out this offering nicely.

Gameplay: 7.5
The activities are well-designed and innovative, and are right up a preschooler's alley. However, there's just not enough variety, and even young users may get bored after awhile. More activities should have been added, which would have extended the life of this program.

Graphics: 8
Great animation, and Blue and her friends look wonderful! The realistic animals in the nature activity are especially well-done, it's not often that kids' programs offer animals that actually look real, instead of bright orange and purple.

Sound: 8
Very nice music and sound effects, especially in the musical activity. Too bad there's only one song for the classroom song reward, though, a variety of songs to play along with would have been nice.

Difficulty: Easy
Even on the hardest levels, these games are not difficult, and are best suited for three- and four-year-olds.

Concept: 8
Several of the activities are fresh and new, and even the musical activity has a unique feel to it.

Overall: 7.8
There are some good activities here, there's just not enough. Also, more educational activities are needed to round out the creative ones. A good addition to a preschool software library, but one that is more of a supplement than a core program.
