Space Interceptor: Project Freedom Review

Everyone, at least at one point during their life, has been fascinated by space and everything that it encompasses. There are so many different possibilities of other humanoids living in distant planets and so forth. Humans have been so captivated by this that there have been countless books, movies, and videogames on this very subject. There is a new game in town for the PC entitled Space Interceptor that takes its own spin on the subject of space and fighting in it. I have to say for a budget price title that this game will offer you a nice game with pretty graphics. Read on to find out more.

Space Interceptor is taken place in the third millennium where the Earth’s natural resources have been fully depleted. Now everyone is looking to space to colonize planets and claim its resources. You are a space pilot that has been contracted by a company called Project Freedom, and your job is to make sure that the competition doesn’t try to take over, and possibly destroy, what has been claimed by this company. Are you up to the challenge?

Nice explosions!

The game is really easy to come to grips with. The first piece of advice that I will give to you is find a camera angle that best suits you, because it can mean the difference between life and death in this game. Players will be able to play through most of the game without even touching their keyboard, because most of the game is done with the mouse. The ship is always in constant motion and it can rotate 360 degrees with the turn of the mouse. Firing off the lasers or missiles can be done by hitting the left of right mouse button. To do a barrel roll you can hit the W or S button on your keyboard.

The missions in this game are varied enough so you will not get the feeling of playing through the same levels over and over again. Some missions will have you shooting down all of the enemy ships; others will have you protecting a ship so it has enough time to make it to a safe place. The best and most challenging missions are when you have to go into an enemy’s territory and decimate certain buildings. These are so challenging because you have to break though their defense which can be really heavy, but after you beat these missions you will have a sense of accomplishment.

The game sure looks nice!

The graphics in Space Interceptor are what make this game worth looking at as they are really great looking!  If you have a powerful enough PC you will be surprised to see how great this game looks for being just a budget title. Everything is extremely detailed and as accurate as possible since the development team used actual space data to make the experience as real as it can be. Everything is just so highly detailed from the space ships you fly and shoot down to the very environments that you will fight in. When you defeat an enemy ship the explosions are really well done with great particle effects that look like something you might see in a movie.

The sound in this game is very sub par. The musical score heard throughout the game is decent, but it is really repetitive, and might get on your nerves after some time. The sound effects used in this game are pretty “space” generic, with the laser beam fire and whizzing sounds as you go through space or the atmosphere of a planet. The voiceovers for this game are pretty bad, but I am unsure if I can attribute it to the lame dialog or the actors. You will hear, we got a new ace, good one, and a couple other annoying one-liners each time you shoot down an enemy craft.

Here are the minimum requirements needed to run this game:

Pentium III or better Processor (700 MHz or better)
256 MB of RAM
Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP
Direct X compliant video card with 32 MB of VRAM
Direct X compatible soundcard
650 MB of Hard Drive Space
Keyboard and Mouse.

Space Interceptor is rated T for Teen for language and mild violence.

Review Scoring Details for Space Interceptor

Gameplay: 8.2
It will take a few minutes to get acclimated to the controls of this game, and find a camera that works best for you. All in all this is a pretty decent game that will give you a quick action fix.

Graphics: 8.6
If you have the system to handle it, Space Interceptor can spout some pretty looking graphics.

Sound: 6.9

The music has a real techno flare, that is decent but does get on your nerves later on in the game. The voice acting will get on your nerves with them saying the same things over and over again.

Difficulty: Easy

Space Interceptor is on the easy side, it can be beaten in no time flat.

Concept: 7.0

While the story isn’t that original it, the way the game plays out is pretty fun.

Overall: 8.2
Just like many of you, I have never heard of Space Interceptor before. This game has some really nice graphics, if you have the PC that can handle it. One of the best things that this game has going for it is the $19.99 price point. If you like flight action games, then I think that you might enjoy this game.
