Jumpstart Advanced 3rd Grade 2003 Review
Knowledge Adventure has re-released several of their flagship JumpStart titles for the year 2003, some of which feature added new content, and some which do not. JumpStart Advanced 3rd Grade is the same as the previous edition in the core Fundamentals CD, but also has new content in the form of two additional CDs, Far Out Field Trip and Mystery Club Vol. 2.
Most children who have a bad day at school come home, grouse about it and then forget about it. But not Polly! If you're a genius, what better way to get back at your history teacher, then by sending your father's robots back in time to change history and putting a "Pollytical" spin on things! Fortunately, Dad left trusty Bottley in charge, and with a little help, he'll be able to track down the time-traveling robots and put things right.
This amusing game is a mystery adventure, with educational activities interspersed throughout. Polly has left clues scattered around the building just to make things more interesting; there are four clues to be collected for each of the twenty-five missions. Polly is a brat, and offers insulting comments in an amusing manner periodically. Kids will definitely enjoy beating her and collecting the clues!
The educational games are pretty fun to play and are sound educationally, but unfortunately, the design of the overall game makes it difficult to gain full benefit from these activities. The activities are incidental to the mystery and really take a back seat. Each activity is short and only a few rounds are played before sending players back to the mystery. The activities can be played separately from the missions, but many of them are designed as "sets" of games, which have to be played together in order each time. Most of the educational focus is on knowledge trivia in science, history and art, with less focus on math and language arts.
Automatic and manual leveling is present, but the manual leveling can only be adjusted while in a particular game, not for the entire program.
Far Out Field Trip is a collection of arcade games, which can only be played by answering questions in a "pac-man" like game, in order to win tokens. These questions are from a range of subjects, like math equations, grammar and science, rather like the old Knowledge Munchers game. The arcade games are simple and offer different levels of play.
Kids can also solve mini-mysteries in Mystery Club Vol. 2, a logical puzzle type game where children earn clues by playing a variety of games. These games are well-designed and exercise the brain, except for one game that simply involves moving a stick figure around obstacles. Our favorites were an anagram type game and a sliding puzzle activity that requires words to be lined up according to similarities in scientific attributes.
The main program, JS 3rd Grade, is an engaging program, and one of the better grade-based games in its ability to appeal to children. However, the adventure aspect is entirely too long, and cannot be clicked through. The activities are hard to access, and are too short. Because of this design weakness, the educational content is thin. The Field Trip game is somewhat fun, and offers some practice in 3rd grade skills, and the Mystery Club game is nicely designed and has a good mix of critical thinking and educational skills practice activities. Overall, a good 3rd grade title, but one that could have been a lot better.
Gameplay: 7.5
The adventure is interesting, but some children may lose interest due to the lengthiness of the dialogue and story before actually getting to play any games. The games are too short, and hard to access.
Graphics: 7
The animation is pretty good for the most part.
Sound: 6
The sound and music is average.
The activities are of a medium range of difficulty, depending on the skill level of player.
Concept: 8
The plot of the Fundamentals CD is very interesting, and the bratty behavior of Polly is exactly what 3rd graders will find funny. The Mystery Club game is also innovative and well-done.
Overall: 7.5
This is one of those games that at first glance is eye-catching because of an attractive presentation and interesting, innovative material, but as more time is spent with it, the lack of depth becomes increasingly apparent. This is a shame, as this could have been a great program, if more care had been taken with the balance of activities to story, and longer playing time devoted to the activities.
