Konung 2 Review

Another RPG pitting good against evil in the quest for a magical bracelet that will bring victory to those who protect it. Will Evil prevail, or can you and your hero's stop evil in its tracks and bring victory to the good guys?

Sound familiar? Well like most games of this type of genre, it never seems to fail that your quest will be against evil and you must protect or find some extraordinary object. But lets try and keep this fresh and go over some of what this game has to offer.

Both graphics and sound leave much to be desired. The game is not eye popping by any means nor is it even close. I have seen better graphics in games done two years ago. It does have a few rare moments that seem ok, unfortunately these are few and far between. Some of the sound effects are pretty much the same you would find in any fantasy RPG, swords clashing, people talking, etc. What baffled me was some of the forest sounds. From what sounded like loons (found only on lakes) to chimpanzees (found usually in jungles.)  Now this might just be something new the developers tried, but it left me confused. It looks like I'm in villages and hard woods but if I close my eyes, I would swear I'm in the Amazon.

Moving around can be quite boring especially at the earlier levels. These you spend fleeing from any battle because you are barely equipped with anything. It's not bad enough you start out alone after choosing one of 6 heroes to start out with all with different abilities that you can add a few points to customize to your liking. My point is run away til you find a friendly town to better equip yourself and maybe add some folks to your party. If you do find yourself enjoying the game, at least with the choice of 6 different heroes you will get at least 6 different games, but yes all seem to have the same goal.

Though you may start out with very little you can pick up odd jobs to earn some extra gold for better supplies. One thing I liked very much is that you can even visit the local loan shark. He's usually the guy selling goods. The down side is that until you pay him back with interest his shop will be closed and you will have to buy goods elsewhere. Talking with other villagers was a bit frustrating because much of the time I was left with only one option to say. Or none of the options fit what I wanted my player to say. This gave me a feeling that this title is way to linear for my liking especially within this genre.

Overall this title reminds me of a budget minded Dungeon Siege, a game I liked very much. It lacks the depth and the beauty DS has but remember it only has a MSRP of about 20 bucks. It also lacks any MP capability so everything will be solo or using AI companions. If your budget is tight and you are looking for an RPG that is affordable, this maybe right up your alley. If you are a gamer who needs a bit more and has a bit more dough, you may want to pass on this one.

Review Scoring Details for KONUNG 2

Gameplay: 7.5
Not much to getting started but seemed like I was fumbling around more with the interface than I have in previous titles. The manual provides little instruction, and there is no in game tutorial. The very beginning was slow for me but once I got into the game it did pick up.

Graphics: 6.5
I know most RPG gamers will say that with this genre, graphics are not that important. Truth is that they could still be better than what is presented here. Visually this game just looks a bit dated. Although great graphics would probably not help the overall rating very much.

Sound: 7
Most of the voiceovers were pretty well done. The sound effects were nothing to write home about. I have heard worse, but that's really no excuse considering technology of today.

Difficulty: Medium
You can toggle the difficulty settings, however even on the easy setting the game is quite challenging.

Concept: 6
A fantasy RPG where you can pick one of six heroes to start your quest with. Other than that it's pretty much just the same old thing only this title is burdened with slow and in my opinion quite boring gameplay.

Overall: 6.5
It's pretty obvious that this game is targeting a budget minded market segment. It may appeal to some but this gamer would say save the twenty bucks and put it towards a title that has broader gameplay and a multiplayer feature.
