Iconolexis Review

Iconolexis is a downloadable puzzle game of strategy with an unusual twist - pictures of words are used, instead of the actual words. The goal of the game is simple; players choose picture icons that need to match the given letters that are scattered on a small grid according to a few rules: to move to the right, the first letter of the new icon must match the last letter of the present icon, and to move up or down, any letter of the new icon can match any letter of the existing tile.

The playing field is laid out in a small grid, with random tiles of letters, icons and special actions. The goal is to reach the Magic Tile at the far right of the grid in the shortest time possible. Special tiles include teleportation, wild tiles, cloning and blocking tiles, among others. The gameplay becomes more difficult as play progresses. The set of tiles to choose from are static and once a tile is used, it is unavailable for play again.

Options include the use of keyboard assignments for various actions, and toggling the audio settings.

This is a simple strategy game that is somewhat fun to play, although not the most complex or exciting puzzle game around. Deciding which tiles to use from the several that match is the main strategy involved, with the actual movement being of a lesser importance. The picture icons lend the game some visual appeal, but sometimes the pictures are hard to decipher, as to what word they represent.

Fans of picture puzzle games may want to give this game a whirl through the demo offered on their site, and if pleased with the game, the price is just right at $10 for the full version.

Gameplay: 5.5
The gameplay is pretty mundane, and while strategy is involved, the game itself isn't very exciting or thought provoking. However, language arts teachers may want to install this on their classroom computer, as it is good practice in word use and kids will like playing for short periods of time.

Graphics: 6
Simple graphics, nothing snazzy.

Sound: 5
The music could have been better, it's pretty bland.

Difficulty: Medium
The game is easy in the beginning, and then progresses in difficulty, but never becomes extremely hard.

Concept: 5.5
The concept isn't particularly innovative or new, although the use of picture icons is pleasant.

Overall: 5.8
Iconolexis is a standard puzzle game that offers some amusement, but nothing to keep people glued to their computers. Teachers may want to give it a whirl, as the combination of strategy and word usage is a good mix for the classroom.
