Mobile Forces Review
Built on the famous and totally reliable UNREAL engine, Mobile Forces is a first rate FPS with a twist. If you can't hit your target with your rifle, or splatter him with a rocket launcher, Mobile Forces gives you the option of hopping into one of several military vehicles and running the enemy down!
The UNREAL engine gives you the things you would expect from this time proven game engine, such as great textured terrain maps, reliable Gameplay, fantastic special effects, and enough realistic sounds to fill a war zone.
The vehicles are supplied with very good physics, and will slide out on ice or catch some good air if you hit a rock to fast, you can even roll them if your not careful! You get the choice of the very fast assault buggy (fast but no armor), the Humvee (not as fast but more protection, and more stable), a 5 ton cargo truck (well protected but pretty slow, can carry 3 troops in the back and two up front), or the APC, armored personnel carrier (very slow but well armored and hard to kill). Use these vehicles to transport yourself and/or your squad to the fight, or use the vehicle as another weapon, and run the enemy down. You can either operate the vehicle yourself or allow one of your squad to drive while you blast away at the enemy.
But be careful as the enemy is also shooting back at you and a well placed shoot to the fuel cap can end your joyride in a huge ball of flames. Blast a vehicle with the rocket launcher and be prepared to duck the flying wreckage that will come raining down on you! The vehicles are a definite plus to the game.
The players are all decked in military garb, but the choices of skins are very limited. The game only gives you a couple of choices and while that is adequate, I would have liked to have seen more choices. The choices of weapons is also pretty limited, and your load out is quite small. This makes it pretty realistic as a real soldier could not carry the huge arsenals available in other games. But while your load out is small, re-supply points are numerous so you can always reload your supply of ammo. Weapons include a pistol, assault rifle, shotgun, sniper rifle, minigun, rocket launcher, hand grenade, and mines. The minigun is really inaccurate, the shotguns range is way to short, the pistol doesn't carry enough punch, so that leaves the rifles, rocket launcher (my favorite, it has a good 4X scope and given enough time even has LOCK ON, and the missiles will follow you target through some very tight turns too!), and the explosives are your most used weapons. And to add to all this, the gore level is fairly low, no flying body parts to wade through.
The maps are all very well textured and are quite large. Lots of details add to the realism of the maps, and all are set in real world situations such as the ghetto, airport, a large dam, parking garage, and a warehouse, plus others. There are lots of good hiding places to set up ambushes and play is not confined to ground level either, there are several maps that offer multilevel play.
The sounds in this game are all top notch. Very realistic engine and weapon sounds add to the total effect of the game. I play it about as loud as my system will handle and my wife is quite upset with me for making so much noise, heck, I can't help it, it sounds great!
Several types of Gameplay are available, Deathmatch, and Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Captains, Detonation, Holdout, Safecracker are just some of them and they can all be played in either single player or Multiplayer modes. In single player mode you can play on your own or as part of a squad in either a Skirmish mode or a Missions mode. Lots of Gameplay options insure unlimited hours of unrestricted mayhem that never seems to get old. If it ever does, then simply up the AI level of the bots and watch 'um come after you with blood in their eyes!
There are lots and lots of FPS games out there. Some make you follow a story line from one end to the other, others are ultra-futuristic. This particular game has no story line, is real world in weapons and locations, is easy to use and play, is visually appealing, and supplies you with hours of nonstop mayhem. There are a few thing I would liked to have seen more of, skins, maps, and weapons, but what they give you is enough.
I have to give this game two big thumbs up!
Gameplay: 8
A multitude of Gameplay options should keep you busy for hours, days, weeks, or
more. Many different modes including some new ones, all can be played in single
or multiplayer modes. UNREAL engine delivers reliable Gameplay, not a glitch
could be found and it runs smooth as ice.
Graphics: 7
UNREAL engine delivers some great maps with good textures, not the very best I
have ever seen, but very very good, and details add to the realism.
Sound: 8
Fantastic sounds from this game. Realistic engine and weapons sounds add to the
game experience. Verbal taunts also add to the game. I play this game very loud
(which gets me in trouble with the wife, but hey, it sounds good!)
Difficulty: Easy
Easy to learn and operate, no difficult or complicated controls, everything is
very straight forward. Game difficulty can be changed by adjusting the AI of the
bots.
Concept: 7.5
The FPS concept is not anything new, but when you add in the use of the
vehicles, and the new Gameplay modes, you have a great FPS that has almost
unlimited replay value.
Multiplayer: 8
Multiplayer mode on LAN gives the player the option to play against other
real life players in any of the Gameplay modes. This game will be a hot one on
the net.
Overall: 8
I really enjoyed this game and had a hard time getting up and walking away
from it, it is highly addictive. The new Gameplay modes will give you enough to
keep your interest for quite some time and the replay value is very high. The
vehicles are a great addition to the standard FPS format and make moving troops
around the map very easy and quick. Love this game and have to give it two
thumbs up!
