Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Mission Pack - Desert Siege Review

Bookmark and Share Share Glink It Glink It

Ghost Recon Desert Siege is a mission pack for Ghost Recon.  It consists of a new 8-mission campaign set in Africa along with 5 new multiplayer maps.  It is not a stand-alone game so you do need the original Ghost Recon to play.  The new mission pack has new enemies with vehicles, new weapons for multiplayer games, improved and new specialist characters, two new multiplayer type games, and a leader board for multiplayer.

Like most expansions (I hate to say) there never seems to be enough new toys and missions to make this a must have, but some gamers will find the new changes just enough to get you to part with the 20 bucks or so this expansion costs.  The missions are very much like the original only set in a different part of the world, Africa to be exact.  Though you might think that desert terrain can get a bit boring, there are enough challenges to make it interesting.  Only 8 new missions nestled into one campaign, which were a bit on the simple side.  This being said, if you only like the single player mode of the game, this might not be enough to entice you to pick up this add on.  Now if multiplayer is more your thing, you will be delighted to know that there are two new multiplayer games Domination and Siege, and some new weapon to boot.

Domination is for 2-4 teams.  Each team starts with a base and each map has a neutral base in the center.  You get more points for bases that you capture and hold.  The more bases, the quicker your points raise.  This game is best played with a time limit; otherwise it can go on for hours.

Siege is pretty much like the attack and defend type of game.  Though these new games can be fun, the original multiplayer games are still a blast.  The new leader board is a big plus.

If you are new to the Ghost recon world please read the review of the original. http://www.gamezone.com/gzreviews/r18689.htm In this case most of the new additions cater to the multiplayer games.  Most combat shooter games really do have a strong following of fans that love to take their talents online for some real competition.  This being said I would highly recommend GRDS for any true combat shooter fan. With the new improvements Most GR fans will agree for an expansion that demands only 20 bucks for the new goodies, is probably money well spent.

Reviewer's Scoring Details

Gameplay: 7
Commanding your task force can be a bit tricky with the current interface and options. Same as before

Graphics: 9
Great rendering and animations

Sound: 9
3D Sound with fantastic environmental sound effects immerse you in the game.  Some new changes to the expansion make it even better than the original

Difficulty: Medium/Hard
3 levels of difficulty.  Even the easiest can be quite difficult.  Go online for the ultimate challenge.

Concept: 7
Squad based shooter with multiplayer capability No real change from the original, which is pretty typical for an expansion.  Some patches that were needed in the original are already on the expansion disk.

Multiplayer: 7
Dedicated games can be found at UBI.  Joining can be cumbersome at first, but once you are in, the games are awesome.  The new maps and weapons are a great bonus and this reviewer like the leader board idea quite a bit.

Overall: 8.5
Lots of replayability here if you like online play
