Doom Collector's Edition Review

A technological breakthrough (for the time) in combat action games, Doom introduced a new 3-D graphics engine that set the gaming world on fire. Mix that with one pissed off marine and a few hundred demons from hell and you had a mega hit. In fact, it was recognized as the hottest 3-D action game ever created and is the most installed software of all time. . (In its time)

When I say “In its time”, I’m referring to the mid 90’s.  The Doom games lead the industry in FPS games and 3D environments.  All this could be enjoyed from a now ancient 486mhz CPU.  Low and behold we now have all the Doom in one great disk.  Current gamers may not appreciate the low-resolution graphics, or the total keyboard play, but rest assured any true gamer should have this in their collection. The read me file does support mouse play, but after many attempts I could not get it to work on both Windows ME and 98.  But the keyboard experience adds to the nostalgia of the game.

Ok here what the collector’s edition is about.

The Ultimate DOOM

You're a space marine armed with a mere pistol. Your mission is to locate more substantial firepower, blow your way through an onslaught of undead marines and mutant demons from hell, and navigate yourself off a radioactive moon base. In order to survive, you have to make it through the 27 blood-splattered levels of Doom.

DOOM II

Ok the Ultimate Doom left you wanting more.  Bring on Doom 2.  The forces of the netherworld have overrun Earth.  Millions are dead and its up to you to save humanity. There are nearly twice as many bad guys to frag your way through, more levels and some new toys to try out on the new monsters.

Final DOOM

This is the final chapter in the legendary Doom series.  This is it the end  (I think this is where they tossed out doom and brought us Quake) 2 new 32-level episodes complete with stories, let you finish what you have started.  More chain gun wielding zombies, revenants, hell knights, and cyber-demons than any other DOOM in history.

Ok now for the nitty-gritty.  If you look at the 3D graphics that are offered to day, there is no comparison. You will think DOOM is ancient…well it is.  That is the beautiful thing.  It was this spectacular game that set the bar on what was to come… Quake, Unreal Tournament…you get the idea.  A true collector of games would have these in their collections already.  If you don’t this is the easiest way to get all three in one convenient package.  Just in time for Christmas.  The hardest thing to do is rate this.  Remember when the Original Star Trek wowed us all with its special effects? (IM talking Captain Kirk days)  Then the next Generation brought us Captain Picard.  All new effects and a better, faster, Enterprise.  Well the original is still good in its own right, but when you have the new eye candy and technology, you look back and say, “I remember when”.  Well the same goes here, For Its time DOOM just plain was the cats meow, and still a great game.  But I have to score it by today’s standards.
