Dig Dug Deeper Review
Dig Dug Deeper is Infogrames remake of the classic 1980's arcade game by Namco, Dig Dug. Like the original, the players mission is to dig out and blow up all the enemies with your amazing drill harpoon thing (hey, even the the creators aren't sure what it is). Featuring a 3d graphics engine, and enhanced gameplay options such as power ups, hazards, and above ground levels, Dig Dug Deeper gives a major face lift to the 80's classic.
Unfortunately in their zealous attempt to create a newer shinier version of Dig Dug, Infogrames managed to ignore some fundamental issues. The level layout is based on a grid system that makes movement while underground difficult especially when trying to turn. Graphically I didn't care for the Americanized super chin look they gave the main character either. The original character design was far more similar to Namco's Mr. Driller. Instead of a cute Japanese character I'm forced to look at a Buzz Lightyear reject. The overall graphics were however a major improvement on the original. The sound effects and music were less developed than I expected, once again hoping that Namco's success with Mr. Driller might influence the Infogrames designers.
Overall it's a decent game but if nostalgia seems the best reason to buy it, I would recommend just finding a copy of the original. Despite it's enhanced graphics and new features in the Infogrames version, it does not offer much that makes it a must have over the original.
Install: Easy
No problems.
Gameplay: 7
Jerky movement in a game based on a simple move and shoot premise.
Graphics: 6.5
Shiny 3d graphics.
Sound: 7
Nothing special.
Difficulty: 6
I thought it was too easy. My main concern was being able to make quick
turns, which unfortunately the engine would not allow.
Concept: 5
Same old game. Sure their are some new features but not enough to warrant a
new game.
Multiplayer: N/A
Overall: 6.5
Dig Dug was a great game in its time, and perhaps it could be a great game
in the future. This version however is not great. It's just another attempt to
profit off nostalgia. If you can't find the original then this is the game for
you.
