Woody Woodpecker: Escape from Buzz Buzzard Park Review

Woody Woodpecker – Escape from Buzz Buzzard Park is a lengthy and challenging 3D action adventure with the look and feel of a console game.

The player becomes immersed in the 3D worlds of the space ride, haunted house, and pirate ship as Woody Woodpecker seeks to rescue Splinter and Knothead from the menacing clutches of Buzz Buzzard. The adventure begins at the gate of Buzz Buzzard’s Theme Park, where he is holding Woody Woodpecker’s niece and nephew captive.  At the start of the game the player controls Woody Woodpecker but can later switch to Knothead or Splinter.  If the player completes all the levels using all three characters, they earn a bonus game at the end. Progressing through these increasingly difficult levels is no easy feat, requiring perfect timing and quick fingers as players jump between various platforms, avoid electrical fences and other hazards, attack various enemies, etc.  A game pad is preferable to a keyboard, however either can be used.  The 3D graphics are nice, but don’t stand out in any special way. There is an appropriate musical score for each themed area, however it is rather short and repetitive.

In the end Woody Woodpecker – Escape from Buzz Buzzard Park will be a fun and satisfying game for those who are up to the challenge and a bit frustrating for those who are not.

Reviewer's Scoring Details

Install: Easy
Although the game installs easily, it requires some unusual setting adjustments before one can play.  It is best to read the manual before installing the game.

Gameplay: 7.0
The interface and game controls are simple to use and are typical to those of a console game.  The game contains many levels and is of substantial length, but may have little or no replay appeal.

Graphics: 7.0
Colorful 3D graphics that aren’t necessarily outstanding, but nice enough.

Sound: 6.5
A decent musical score, but a bit repetitive.

Difficulty: 6.5
This is somewhat of a white-knuckle ride and not a good choice for inexperienced players.  Skilled players will appreciate the challenge this game offers, but the level of difficulty makes the game unsuitable for youngsters under 8.  A choice of difficulty level would have made this game more accessible to a broader audience.

Concept: 5.5
Originality is not one of this game’s stronger points.  Most all the elements of the game, i.e. jumping across floating platforms, avoiding projectiles, races between levels, and space, haunted house, and pirate themed areas, seem rather ordinary.

Overall: 7.0
Though none of it’s qualities really stand out, Woody Woodpecker – Escape from Buzz Buzzard Park will prove to be a lengthy challenge for the experienced gamer, and a fairly decent action game over all.
