Star Wars X-Wing Trilogy Review
Okay, corny opening line but believe me there is nothing corny about this trilogy! Now I admit that I am a die-hard fan of all and everything Star Wars, but I made sure I was completely unbiased when it came to rating. I knew from the moment that ship appeared on my screen that I was in for some serious long hours of game.
Since this is a three in one deal, I will review each separately highlighting the points I found especially stand outs (although this is hard to do as there are so many). The first one I played was Tie Fighter. The first thing that caught my eye was the outstanding graphics, which to me is important when playing a game of which a movie was made. You expect exact detail and you get it! While your goal will be to restoration of the Imperial Rule the lead up is a lot of training to get you there. It took me a few times till I felt ready to do battle but I have to tell you that the training can be intense. Make sure you take full advantage the training and make sure you have the music on full force. The sound effects make this soar and you have to see the combat chamber to believe it! You will have 100 missions to choose from and each one has as much challenge as the other.
X-Wing- This was my second gameplay and I will admit, kept me going for hours. Although I enjoyed Tie Fighter, this one seems to have a lot more fighting going on and a different challenge altogether. Your direct enemy will be Darth Vader himself. As a pilot you will find yourself piloting fighters of gigantic proportion with some of the most sophisticated cockpits you have ever seen. I had to refer to the enclosed manual a few times, but the manual can be a lifesaver as it is concise and aids every step of the way. The feel of speed you get when you are in action is unbelievable and as you make your hit and run raids you get a feel of exhilaration that’s hard to explain. It is war in the truest sense.
X-Wing Alliance- This one to me, is a totally different feel than the others and although requires as much skill as the other two, it also requires some skill. Although it has over 50 missions to choose from I am focusing on one for an example. You start out with a in-depth history of your family members as well as enemies. You have to protect your family’s interests and a little smuggling going on is needed. This will take you to the strategic part of the game, as you will need to take out all the stops. As a member of the Azzameen family you will be called to go out on as many missions as it takes to conquer the Viraxo Industries led by K’Armyn Viraxo. I found this one to be one of the most challenging as you must completely finish the mission you are given before going on and going up a level. It seems like I was back and forth to the transport more times than I can count. But once going, it gets easier to get it right the first time.
This is just a small portion of the Trilogy and it would take volumes to write about all the other parts you just have to see and experience. Although this is what all Star Wars fans crave, if you were not a Star Wars fans before you will soon become one after playing this game. It stays true to the movie and gives so much more. A must own for all those who loves the good over evil play and where better than in a galaxy far, far away!
Install:
Easy
Installation
of 4 CDs. Separate games include one or two CDs.
Gameplay:
9.5
The one thing I especially appreciate about this game is the choices you are
given when it comes to missions. No standard dozen or so but hundreds (Alliance
has 50).
Graphics:
10.0
When
it comes to graphics, it just doesn’t get any better than this. Your star
filled galaxy is on par with any planetarium. The fighters give you a real sense
of sitting in front of the controls and you can almost feel the thrust of speed
as you twist and turn your way into war. Detail is absolutely unbelievable down
to the patches on the pilot’s suits.
Sound:
10.0
From the narration to the music this sound is Dolby all the way!
Difficulty:
10.0
Difficulty stays consist no matter which game you are playing. The challenge
never stops and you can proceed to your comfort level after taking as much
training as you feel you need. Gameplay which is fast and furious throughout.
Concept:
9.5
A
good versus evil in a setting which is very, very familiar. Challenge, strategy
and skill all make this game a step above others of the same genre.
Multiplayer:
10.0
Multiplayer is highly suggested here and if you decide to play online you will
find other true Star Wars aficionados and share old Star Wars stories while
battling it out.
Overall:
10.0
This trilogy to me definitely deserves a 10. Not only for the graphics, which
are simply awesome or the sound that takes you into the fighter’s seat but
most of all the fact that the game stays right on target with the movie of which
it was taken. The galaxy just does not get any better than this!
