Hoyle Card Games 2001 Review

Hoyle card games have always made the best software card games on the market and this is no exception. An updated version of Hoyle card games this version packs even more fun in a deck than its predecessor.

It has all the same games as the previous Hoyle version but also a bonus of added games to play. Believe me, this really adds to the total game as although I thoroughly enjoyed playing the original version I always had that feeling of wanting more. Hoyle came through again! This version has added Pitch and Canasta and all our favorites are jazzed up a notch.

The opening board has fewer clicks to get to start up and offers 10 different characters to play against. This version has given the characters the same wonderful irascible, sarcastic wit that they had in the previous version. I have to admit that the sarcasm is even better which is one of those things that makes the game that more interesting to play as well as entertaining.

The face maker set-up has been simplified in this version making it a lot more fun creating a "wow, looks just like me profile". Another big plus in this version is the fact that you no longer need the CD in the drive to operate the game, which is great, as it gives those who love playing on their laptops a lot more leeway. Now you can load on the game, take it with you and still enjoy all the options of the game instead of only the game itself. This is a real bonus!

This version has all the same great background and choices in players, music and games themselves. This is one of those definite have to own card games as it will give you hours and hours and hours of unlimited card fun and entertainment not to mention some exercise in patience with your incorrigible opponents!

Install: Easy
Requires one installation of CD. New version allows you to play without CD in drive

Gameplay: 9.0
The gameplay is as consistent in the original version. No matter what game selection you choose you will not be disappointed. Each game has vast selections from everything to characters to background to music.

Graphics: 9.0
The graphics are exceptional. Colors are bold and bright. Characters are well defined with everything from clothing to their facial expressions. The cards themselves are perfectly scored and the backgrounds are play inducing.

Sound: 9.0
Sound is excellent on every level. In a game like this sound really is important, especially when you want some feedback from opponents. This game gives plenty and all of it is crystal clear. The dialogue given to the characters is priceless in humor and sardonic wit. The music really jives with the game itself.

Difficulty: 9.0
Very even balanced when it comes to the difficulty on par with the level played. From one of the easiest choices of Fish to a more challenging one such as Bridge, each game has just the right amount of difficulty involved. One thing I really like about the game is not only can you set your difficulty level but also that of your opponents. Gives a more equal playing field, although not any less challenging.

Concept: 9.0
The concept of card playing is not new but this version makes it seem like it is. The great choice in selection of games mixed with the characters themselves give this game a stand out appearance. This is one of those games you can play for hours, relax and then play again with as much enthusiasm as the last time played.

Multiplayer: 9.0
This is one of those games which when played online gives the game a whole new look and a lot more challenging. Although I like the one on one, the online playing gives a new level of play to the game. It really adds a new dimension in my opinion and is a real plus.

Overall: 9.0
Overall this game is one of the best card games I have played since playing the original Hoyle card games. Those who love card games will find this version not only equal in graphics, choices and characters to its predecessor but I believe they will also find that this version has its own special appeal and challenges. This is a have to own card game for the card sharks in all of us!
