Shark! Hunting the Great White Review
I want to start this review by letting everyone know that it does contain some blood and violence. The box is clearly marked with this alert but I wanted to include it in my review. That said, I can honestly said that there is not enough blood and violence to detract from the game, on the contrary it only adds to the realism of the whole hunt.
You start out the game by choosing your gaming option. You can either go with the Career mode or Random missions. Each choice gives you a completely different game and each has its own dangers and rewards. Career Mode however gives you the most realistic look into the life of a real-time Professional shark hunter. This is better than any of the learning channels specials you have ever seen and has given me a new respect for those that choose to hunt sharks for a living (also a new wonder of why?)
Career Mode is one of those build up games where you must complete several steps to successfully complete the game. You will be given just about nada to start out with but with some quick and skillful moves you will in no time have a boat a some very sharp diving equipment. You are given six missions to complete. You have the choice to unlock secrets to help make future missions easier to ace. I highly recommend this option as I did not use it the first time and to tell the truth, the game would have been a lot easier if I had! One of those trial and error hints I am passing on. A hint here also is that although the difficulties range from easy to hard, each level contains its own unique items and you cannot carry them onto another level. Whatever you collect in easy will stay in easy and so forth. This really gives you a feeling of having the choice to play more games than you first thought.
You are also asked to select your diver. An option of creating is also available. After you have created your diver to your specifications the hunt is on! You click on the mission button and are soon in the “divers seat”. You will be told what your mission is in great detail and also where the mission is to take place. Your next job is to select some equipment. I have to tell you that this is some sweet equipment! You of course have to choose the standard fins, air tank and diving suit but wait until you get to the actual weapons! Spearguns! And Bangsticks! and Knives! Oh My! Sorry folks little carried away there.
If you choose to go with the Random Missions you get just as much of a challenge as in Career Mode. You still get to do some serious fish hunting in all of the 8 locations but you cannot choose any of the High Tech equipment. Also, the random option is a one shot deal so you finish one mission and go on to another. No build up gameplaying but still as much fun.
The hunt itself is hard to put into words as I have never in all my years played a game this nail biting. You are shown your prey with a great camera view. You can see where you have to hit and I swear you can feel the tension in your diver as well as your own. Can you outmaneuver this bad boy of the sea? Will he strike you before you strike him?? What about his friends who have come over to help? All I can say is you have to get this game and find out what happens!
Install:
Easy
This game requires DirectX 7 or higher. If you don’t have it don’t
worry, the game comes with option to install it.
Gameplay:
9.3
I have to tell
you that I love the even gameplay you have no matter what level or Mode you
choose. Easy is as challenging in its own way as Hard is. The same can also be
said about Random Missions. Each game is a game within itself. This gives you
different views of the hunt and a wider scope to choose from.
Graphics:
10.0
Graphics
just don’t get any better than this! No expense was too great when it came to
the development of this game. From the eerie darkness of the sea to the muscles
in the diver to the glimmer in the eye of the shark, excellence is the name of
the game. Even the Algae is as close to the real thing as you can get.
Sound:
9.5
The high quality in sound only lends to the realism of the dangers of the hunt.
Difficulty:
10.0
Each level is consistent when it comes to the challenge. Never so easy you get
tired of it but not so challenging you cannot master the hunt. Perfect!
Concept:
9.1
The concept of hunting the animal has been around for a long time but never at
this level of play nor as realistically done.
Multiplayer: N/A
Overall:
9.5
The fact that the
developers of this game took great pains to get it as close to the real thing as
possible is what makes this game stand out among other similar games. You get a
first hand view of what professional shark hunters go through as well as some
intense gameplay. Everything is so finely honed that although you know it is
just a game you get that feeling of being the hunter or being the hunted. I also
like the fact that as you play the game you are also getting a lesson in sharks
themselves. This game goes the distance when it comes to play and throwing in
some facts that really are interesting when it comes to the world of sharks. A+
all the way!
