The long-awaited sequel to Battlegoat’s Supreme Ruler 2010, Supreme Ruler 2020 is looking to right the wrongs of its predecessor, namely overwhelmingly complex gameplay elements coupled with structurally limiting campaigns. After spending some time with the preview build, it’s safe to say that the developers have definitely made some strides in improving these elements, making the game a lot more fun to play for both hardcore fans and newcomers to the series.

Supreme Ruler 2020 allows you to select from a ton of different nations throughout the world, and try to either complete a variety of different campaigns with set goals, or take on the “Super Sandbox” mode, which allows you to take your nation and simply put them on top of the global food chain.

The campaigns in the main gameplay mode are a good way to bring newcomers up to speed to the game. The initial tutorial missions will let you get your feet wet with the game’s mechanics, teaching you the ropes and giving you a hint of the deep features that lay beneath the surface.

While the game will allow for newcomers to quickly get acclimated to the gameplay, there is still a tremendous amount of depth for seasoned vets. You’ll have access to tons of elements for your chosen country, from the economy to the military and your relations with other nations of the world. The game is extremely deep and very open-ended, allowing you a full sandbox mode that basically makes the world your oyster.

Graphically, Supreme Ruler 2020 looks very clean and polished for a turn-based strategy game. The interface has been vastly improved from Supreme Ruler 2010 and is much easier to navigate, and the maps are easy to peruse quickly.

Supreme Ruler 2020 is shaping up to be an extremely deep turn-based strategy game with tons of complex elements that really must be seen firsthand. Look for it to launch later this month.
