E3 2006 First Look Preview
One game showcased by 1C this year is an RTS title set in WWII. This wasn’t just something that they looked up in a couple of books and tried to make it as accurate as possible, but instead they took time and researched elements from the war for over 1 and a half years in order to try and make it as accurate to history as possible, including being able to not only play as the Axis or Allies … but as Poland, the French, or other specific countries to the war. Dates are also accurate, as Germany’s opening mission in the demo was the 1939 invasion of Poland which is what sparked off the whole conflict.
Theater of War offers up a solid RTS engine which looked easy enough to get into for anyone who’s familiar with that type of game, but in addition puts a few new things into the fray. For example, each individual in your unit will have multiple elements to determine how he does at certain things, like leadership or driving, and these can be leveled up as they perform tasks in that area correctly. For example, someone you allocate to a tank who has a low driving skill won’t do that great the first time out, but will some point allocation and victories in battle, he will get better as he goes.
Each character will also have multiple stats to manage as well, and aside from just health you will also have to check for his morale, and there is even a readout to tell you the effectiveness of weapons at various ranges to help you determine the best solution for obtaining certain goals. One unique feature of Theater will also be the fact that this is really the first WWII title to really go into trench warfare, and you will be able to have your soldiers dive into a foxhole and shoot or launch grenades from cover.
Theater of War is looking to be a good RTS title, and it’s looking like there will be a lot of new and unique elements added in to give you something more than that same old WWII RTS you’ve played before. The release date? Be looking around 4Q 2006 or 1Q 2007.
