Do any of you remember a game by the name of Homeworld? Well I know that many of you have because it helped revolutionize many things about strategy games when it came out. If you are a fan of this game or of any strategy games then you will want to pay attention to a game called Sword of the Stars. Read on to find out more about it and why this game should perk your interest.

You might ask yourself what exactly is Sword of the Stars? Well fear not as I will explain. Sword of the Stars is a Space Strategy game that offers players many more things then previous games that came before it. Players will be able to explore various planet’s, manage their mighty empire, research new and more powerful technologies, and become the ruler of the universe. Unlike other games that have come before it, there are a lot of new additions that make this game the best out there.

This game is a 4X strategy game, which means the player has four different goals in the game: eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate. There are many different ways to get this done that players will have access to. What makes this game so fun to play is that there are four unique races that players can become: Human, Hiver, Tarkas, and Liir, and they each have their own distinct advantages and disadvantages. Also each race has their own distinct mode of transportation between the various star systems, which create their own unique sense of play and will determine how to use that to help conquer the universe.

When you first load the game you might be a little overwhelmed at what you have before you. If you have played any 4X strategy games in the past you might feel at home pretty quickly. The developers did something really nice for the players and created a tutorial mode that will help ramp players up quickly. Another thing is that if you take a few minutes and really look at the HUD, you will see that it is really simple and easy to use, especially once you start playing.

One of the best things about this game is how it is played. First of all this game is just like any of the previous 4X games you might have played in your life, such as: Master of Orion, Alpha Centauri, Civilization, and many others. So this means that the majority of this game is turn-based, but that is where the similarities end. Once you engage in combat the game turns into real-time combat in a 3D environment. This makes the game a lot more fun and rewarding especially when you enter into a battle zone, and since you have direct control over what is going on.

The best thing about this game to me is that I can build my own ships from various sizes. Even though there are predefined ship sections and weapons. It is always nice getting to see my very own ships do battle with other ships out in the galaxy. This also helps mix things up in the game as well; as you will never know what your enemies will have built. Unlike other strategy games on the market you know what the enemies have, but here you just know the choices they have to make their own ships with. So each time you play the game you can have a completely different experience with it.

From what I have seen and played thus far, Sword of the Stars is shaping up to be a great game. I can not wait to see the finished product with its high resolution graphics and sounds, as it will be a sight to behold and play.
