E3 2006 First Look Preview

While we gamers have gotten many war games based out of World War II and a few from Vietnam, most offer the same stuff … FPS, RTS, or 3^rd person squad based. Well, 1C has a game slated for a 4Q 2006 or 1Q 2007 release which looks to allow players to experience the war from a whole different perspective … from behind the controls of a Huey chopper.  

Whirlwind takes place in Vietnam and is patterned after actual events that took place in 1965. Rather than just piloting your Huey, you will always be part of a group to help lend support and get the job done. One really unique aspect of the game is that unlike most other war games, you will not just be responsible for engaging the enemy. Instead, you will be required to get into engagements or skirmishes to take care of your main missions, which will revolve around such things as evac, rescue, or recon.  

Whirlwind is certainly looking good so far, with decent environmental effects like swaying grasses and trees that move independently of one another, great lighting and shadowing effects on the ground and water, and even a detailed and realistic portrayal of the cockpit of a Huey chopper. Detail fans will also be happy to know that each detail even down to the rivets on the outside, gauges and dials, and even the gunner’s targeting reticule are accurate.
