E3 2006 First Look Preview
One thing I’m seeing a bit of here at the show this year is games based on books. One of those was being showcased by Akella (and is slated for a 2Q 2007 release) by the name of Hard to be a God. This is based on a book by the same name by the Strugatsky Brothers, and follows a strong and intelligent graduate of a medieval secret service academy as he is sent to scout and report back on a kingdom beset by anarchy.
The game is a top down, three quarter viewpoint and RPG title similar to games like Diablo. Since the main character is cooperating with earth’s forces, he will gain access to some incredibly powerful technology and allow him access to over 100 types of weapons – both medieval and modern. In addition, the developers added in a diplomacy system where character’s thoughts and interactions with you will be based on clothing, rather than solely on good deeds and such. Dress really nice, and you’ll be better liked.
The game is already looking great, with some really advanced shadows and lighting, and little additions to make it stand out like brightening and dimming of the landscape as clouds pass below the sun or tree leaves swaying in the breeze. There is also some great character and environment interactions, and one part of the demo showed the character on horseback leaping through a shallow creek complete with splashes and realistic movement. This could be a good game for you RPG fans, so be on the lookout for it after the first of the year.
