E3 2006 First Look Preview
As anyone knows, there are tons of MMORPG’s out there to choose from … WoW, EQ, City of Heroes, and the list literally goes on and on. Well, there are also some great offline massive RPG titles out there and here at the show this year, one of which is a continuation in a series by Aspyr. Anyone familiar with the Gothic series should sure be excited about the release of Gothic 3 coming up in fall of this year.
Gothic 3 is essentially a massive role-playing adventure offline, and the series has been revamped with a new graphics engine. You will choose and create your own character, then will level him or her up as you choose (magic user versus fighter) in an open class system rather than having to follow a set class path. The story revolves around orcs heading down from the north and enslaving humans, and from this point you can also choose to either fight the “good” fight and help out the humans or side with the orcs. You can also play both sides and work as sort of a mercenary, but you can bet that there will be some story twists and such thrown in to keep everything interesting and decisions that you make will determine the final outcome.
Gothic 3 will feature real time combat with a fully rotating camera to help you soft target your enemies, which comes in handy if you are surrounded. Fans and new players to the series will also be impressed with the new engine, as it produces some really nice environmental and lighting effects (down to the sky and clouds turning red when firestorm is cast and such) and NPC’s will even go about doing tasks like cleaning up in front of their shop during the day and heading to the local tavern for an ale at night.
With great looks, intelligent and reactive AI, tons of weapons and armor, over 40 spells, and 7.5 square miles of terrain to explore, Gothic 3 looks like it will keep you RPG fans busy and happy for quite a while.
