E3 2004 PreviewsTake one part football, one part gladiatorial combat and one part fantasy and role it all together and you have some idea about the concept behind Chaos League from Cyanide and Strategy First.

The game also has a little tongue-in-cheek humor attached to it. This title shown at the E3 in Los Angeles, and because of the obvious connection to football, how appropriate it was to have a pig drop the ball to start the game.

From that point on, the object is – quite simply – to take control of the ball and move it across the opposing teams end line. To do that, you will incorporate melee skills and magic. The game features 10 races with 70 different types of players and 170 spells and skills with which to train your warriors.

But while this game features strong graphics and sound effects, the Cyanide has shaded this all with humorous elements. There are ways to cheat in the game. You can dope your athletes, set traps, work the spectators or corrupt the officials. The game also sports a career mode in which you can hire and trade players and work your way through tournament tiers toward the championship.

The game is a mouse-driven click-and-point affair. You can use on-the-fly tactical elements to work the team toward the end line. You have receivers and linemen.

Your receiver tucks the golden football under an arm and heads downfield. An opposing player runs up to intercept, fists at the ready, but your receiver is prepared. A quick kick to the jaw and the would-be stopper is flat on its back.

The graphical elements of this game are lush, and this game is loaded with challenge. Chaos League features multiplayer gaming through a LAN or the Internet.

Chaos League seems to be the perfect title for sports fans wishing a little more fantasy in a real-time strategic setting. If you are looking for challenge and fun, this title will provide its share of both.
