E3 2004 PreviewsWorld domination.  How many of us have dreamed of this before?  Maybe you thought in history class that certain evil dictators needed to be removed from power to avoid global domination.  Perhaps you think the current crisis in the Middle East should be resolved and you’re confident you could do it.  Well with Super Power 2 now you have the chance to take over the entire world.

Super Power 2 is a world simulation, strategy game.  You start off the game by selecting a starting country in the game.  Once you’ve selected your starting world you then have complete control over the country.  The demo on display at E3 had several impressive features on display.  One feature in the game had the developer selecting the United States as his starting country.  Everything was fine with his approval ranking in the game until he made a few controversial decisions.  The first decision he made was to legalize drugs in the United States.  Once this decision was made, his approval ranking dropped.  The next decision he made was to make the United States a dictatorship.  This plunged his approval ranking within the game.  The developer even mentioned that this could cause the residents within the U.S. to move to Canada or Mexico.

The next scenario the developers showed off was the war section of the game.  The developer decided to declare war on Canada (blame Canada!) and had one of the troops within the U.S. start an invasion.  Once the U.S. troops crossed the Canadian border, almost the entire European community became hostile towards the U.S.  The European countries then sent troops over to the stop the U.S. forces in Canada.  FYI-The U.S. forces held strong for a long time.

One of the most interesting aspects of the game is the unique map system within the game.  Every country across the globe is included in the game.  The graphics are presented with a view of the earth.  But you have the ability to zoom in to a city level within a specific country.  The developers mentioned that the maps are represented from a major geographic company that uses satellite imagery to map the globe.  The developer then zoom in on my home town and I was about to see a layout that looked similar to what you might see on your local weather forecast.   The developers mentioned that if your hometown was not included in the game that you can add the city to the game.

Super Power 2 was an amazing game on display at E3.  The global view and ability to control any country across the globe is impressive.  But then having the ability to zoom in on any city across the world was amazing.  The developers mentioned that the game will have a multiplayer mode that will allow 32 players to compete online.  Each player will control a specific country and must make the appropriate decisions to control his country.  But you better watch out in case someone else declares war on your country.  Look for Super Power 2 later this year.
