Freelance journalist Matt Carter was sent to Soviet Russia on a routine story, only to be thrown in prison upon arrival. Cold War follows Matt as he attempts to escape prison, and possibly an even worse fate. During his adventures he’ll be uncovering many more unexpected secrets as well. Cold War’s story will be told in-game and through graphic novel-style cut scenes.

Since Matt was stripped of all belongings before being thrown into prison, a big part of the game is stealth, substitution, and creativity. Matt will have the ability to move and hide bodies, so players that do want to sneak have a way of keeping other guards oblivious to their sabotage.

Players won’t have to sneak if they don’t want to though, and after collecting some weapons a little ways in they may not want to at all, but the game allows for either path so it’s up to you how Matt escapes.

The game is played in a third-person, behind-the-back perspective, allowing players to look around with one joystick as they move with the other.

At times Matt’s best friend will be his X-ray camera. Using this, players will be able to see through walls or detect lasers and even send out EMP bursts to knock enemies out or explode canisters. Another available ability is the power to construct devices, traps, or weapons out of various items found throughout levels. This craft will aid in avoiding guards and keeping Matt alive.

Cold War will also feature some real locations, such as Chernobyl, Lenin’s Mausoleum, and Lubyanka prison. The development team studied these locations closely to get the most accurate and realistic representations they could.

Cold War is being developed by Mindware Studios for the PC and Xbox. Currently it’s expected to escape this fall.
